Peace and Human Rights

War, nuclear weapons and militarisation are also issues of health. Physicians for Social Resposibility – Finland (PSR) works for peace both in Finland and internationally by advocating for the prohibition of nuclear weapons, promoting human security, and raising awareness of and preventing the health impacts of war.

Peace Work Means Protecting Health

PSR’s peace work is based on the belief that sustainable security cannot be built with weapons, but by strengthening the foundations of peace, human rights and international cooperation. As a medical organisation, we bring a health perspective to discussions on the effects of war, weapons and violence on people and healthcare systems.

We advocate for nuclear disarmament, arms control and human security. We closely follow the impacts of conflicts on civilians and healthcare systems, for example in Gaza and Ukraine, and highlight the long-term health consequences of war.

Get involved

PSR’s peace work includes advocacy, public discussions, training, writing and collaboration with decision-makers, researchers, doctors and civil society organisations. Together with other peace organisations, we engage with policymakers, participate in international networks and spread knowledge about the health impacts of war and weapons.

There are many ways to take part: by joining campaigns, events and discussions, or by contributing your own expertise, experience and new ideas. Students, healthcare professionals and anyone interested in peace work are warmly welcome to join.

Networks and cooperation

PSR is part of Finnish and international peace networks. We participate in the work of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) networks, as well as the ICAN Finland network.
